About Us
Based in Lytchett Matravers, Happy Horses Sanctuary was initially founded to rescue ex-racehorses and Thoroughbreds that found themselves unwanted and without a home.
Shirley
was the first racehorse to be taken into the sanctuary after suffering an
injury, many people insisted that the damage warranted her being put to
sleep immediately. Happy Horses Sanctuary however believed that she should
be given a chance.
Shirley is now 48 years old, she is still with the Sanctuary and still runs around the field like a yearling, plays her field buddy Woody up something rotten and is happy living out her life as a permanent resident at the Sanctuary.
Lark was the first pony to be rescued and she saw the Sanctuary grow to take on all breeds of horses and ponies whatever their needs. Lark was re-homed in April 2006 and is very happy in her new home.
The Sanctuary now has 20 horses and ponies both in permanent residence and looking for homes, oh and lets not forget Pork Chop the Kune Kune pig, who keeps a watchful eye over everyone (well anyone with food that is!).
The Sanctuary survives on the kind donations of others and by fundraising events.
