Happy Horses Sanctuary was initially founded in 1990 to rescue ex-racehorses and Thoroughbreds who found themselves unwanted and without a home. Shirley (pictured below left) was the first racehorse to be taken into the sanctuary after suffering an injury - many people insisted that the damage warranted her being put to sleep immediately. However, Happy Horses Sanctuary believed that she should be given a chance and she spent the rest of her years happily grazing and frolicking with her new found friends.

Lark (below middle picture) was the first pony to be rescued and she saw the Sanctuary grow to take on all breeds of horses and ponies whatever their needs. Lark was re-homed in April 2006 and is very happy in her new home. Pork Chop, the Kune Kune pig pictured below right, kept us company at the Sanctuary from the beginning until he passed away in 2010.

The Sanctuary currently has 28 horses and ponies - some will be permanent residents and others are looking for new homes.

The Sanctuary survives thanks to kind donations, fundraising events and hardworking volunteers. If you would like to know more about the Sanctuary and the work we do for horses and ponies or would like to make a donation please feel free to contact us.
